July 20, 2006
I am delighted to announce that Kathryn A. Atchison has been named Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industry Relations at UCLA. Atchison was selected for this position through a search process after having served as Interim Vice Provost since January 2005. She will report to the Provost and, in her capacity as Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industry Relations, will also work closely with the Vice Chancellor for Research.
Kathryn Atchison has served as Interim Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industry Relations with great success, transforming the Office of Intellectual Property (OIP) by, among other things, improving open communication with faculty, initiating a student internship program, and moving industry contracting into the OIP to enable better service to industry.
Atchison is a Professor in the Division of Public Health and Community Dentistry. A dental educator with 20 years of experience in public health and clinical and health services research, Atchison has extensive experience in research, teaching, research administration, and management of individual and institutional conflicts of interest. She is President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry and a former participant in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women. She received her D.D.S. degree from the Marquette University Dental School in 1978 and M.P.H. degree from Boston University School of Public Health in 1982.
Atchison formerly served as Associate Dean for Research & Knowledge Management at the UCLA School of Dentistry, where she catalyzed and facilitated the quadrupling of research funding from $2.5 million to more than $10 million. Atchison also developed strong participatory research programs for faculty and students, which resulted in growth of career development applications and RO1's.
UCLA is a leading research university, with a level of research funding that is among the highest of all universities in the United States. As Vice Provost of Intellectual Property and Industry Relations, Kathryn Atchison will help strengthen our intellectual- and industrial-property relationships and foster new ones, with an eye toward making the products of our research programs available and thereby enhancing economic development in our region, state, and nation.
Please join me in congratulating Kathryn Atchison and in welcoming her to this position.
