Vice Chancellor Pete Blackman Announces January 2007 Retirement

July 20, 2006

Vice Chancellors, Deans and Directors:

Vice Chancellor Pete Blackman has confirmed to me his desire to retire in January 2007, in accord with his longstanding succession plan. Pete will leave an extraordinary mark on UCLA through the multitude of capital projects that have transformed our campus and that he has overseen in his nearly quarter century of service to the University.

In anticipation of Pete's retirement, the Regents have approved the necessary actions to support our decision to transfer responsibilities for Capital Programs to Vice Chancellor Steve Olsen, effective immediately. During the next six months, Pete and Steve will work together in Capital Programs to facilitate a seamless transition. Steve will become fully integrated into the execution of all planning, budgeting and project delivery activities. He will participate in all consequential strategy sessions and senior-level operational meetings related to the completion of the health sciences projects, Broad Art Center, the NanoSystems Building and the Engineering I Replacement Building. During this time, Pete will provide direct oversight of the health sciences projects-including the Ronald Reagan-UCLA Medical Center and Santa Monica Hospital. Pete has also indicated his willingness, following his retirement, to be available on a consultative basis in matters relating to the completion of the hospital.

As Vice Chancellor of Finance, Budget and Capital Programs, Steve will continue to report directly to the Chancellor and to operate in partnership with other senior campus and system-wide leadership. He also will continue to serve as the chief financial officer for the campus and to support UCLA's academic mission through strategic leadership of fiscal, budgetary and capital program resources. He will maintain responsibility for campus-wide planning and budget, audit and advisory services, and controls and accountability, as well as for capital programs.

I know that you will join me in expressing UCLA's deepest gratitude to Pete for his remarkable service and in fully supporting Steve in his expanded role.

Sincerely,

Norman Abrams
Acting Chancellor
