Assistant Provost John Hamilton Leaves Chancellor's Organization

August 10, 2006

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to inform you that John Hamilton, who has served as the campus' Assistant Provost for the past three years, has accepted a position with the UCLA Program in Global Health and will be leaving the Chancellor's Organization at the end of September. John has been recruited to lead the Program's new research and training initiative in East Africa and will be relocating to Malawi to establish a central base of operations there. For those of you who know John, there is a "rightness" to this transition even though his departure will be a significant loss to all of us. This move weaves together his skills in administration, demonstrated over twenty-two years of service to UCLA, with his hitherto extracurricular commitment to the current health crisis in that area of the world; a commitment that has already contributed to establishing one of the largest HIV/AIDS treatment and education centers in Malawi. I personally want to express my deep appreciation for John’s outstanding service as Assistant Provost and I know that you all join me in wishing John the very best in his new position.

I have asked Maryann Jacobi Gray, Director of Strategic Initiatives, to take John's place as Assistant Provost and she has graciously agreed. She will assume this position as of October 1, 2006. Please join me in welcoming her in this capacity.

Sincerely,

Daniel Neuman
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
