Deans, Directors, Department Chairs and Administrative Officers:
I am pleased to announce the establishment of a Division of Undergraduate Education, consolidating several administrative units that have reported to Vice Provost Judith L. Smith for a number of years.
The Division will serve as the campus-wide advocate for undergraduate education, with the goal of achieving the highest-quality teaching and learning. It also will promote academic success for UCLA's diverse undergraduate population, ensuring that all students have access to a challenging array of educational opportunities, from foundational courses to advanced research projects.
The scope of the Division is broad, encompassing innovative programs such as the Freshman Cluster program, academic support units such as the Academic Advancement Program and undergraduate scholarship programs such as those offered through the Scholarship Resource Center.
As Vice Provost, Professor Smith serves as administrative liaison to the Academic Senate's Undergraduate Council. She also consults widely regarding issues of undergraduate education with the College and professional school deans, as well with as the Division of Student Affairs.
More information about the Division and the programs that are open to all UCLA undergraduates can be found at the new web site: www.ugeducation.ucla.edu.
Sincerely,
Daniel Neuman
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
