Social Sciences Acting Dean Appointment Approved

January 18, 2007

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to inform you about the transition of the leadership for the division of Social Sciences following the Board of Regents' approval of the appointment of Scott Waugh, former dean of Social Sciences, as acting executive vice chancellor and provost.

I am pleased to report that the Board of Regents also approved the appointment of Professor Reynaldo F. Macías as acting dean of the Division of Social Sciences, the largest academic division in the College.

Professor Macías brings to his new role 35 years of academic leadership and national service, as well as an outstanding career in research and teaching about language, education, literacy, teacher preparation and multicultural curriculum issues.

Professor Macías has served on the UCLA faculty since 1998, and is currently chair of the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies.  He holds joint faculty appointments in the departments of Education and Applied Linguistics.

He is co-founder of Aztlán—International Journal of Chicano Studies Research, and of the National Association of Chicano Social Science.  He has served as editor or a member of the editorial board for the National Association for Bilingual Education Journal, the Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, and the Language Assessment Quarterly.

In 1994, Professor Macías was honored by the National Association for Bilingual Education as a pioneer in the field.  He has served as the Assistant Director of the National Institute for Education, responsible for Reading and Language Studies.  And, in 1996, he was appointed by President Clinton to the Advisory Board for the National Institute for Literacy, serving until 2003.

I know you will join me in thanking Scott Waugh for his dedicated service to the College as dean of social sciences since 1992.  He has led a powerful division to new levels of programmatic and research excellence.

Sincerely,

Patricia O'Brien
Executive Dean
