Vice Chancellors, Deans and Directors:
I am delighted to announce that the Regents today approved the appointment of Scott Waugh as UCLA Acting Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.
Scott has been a part of UCLA through five decades — as an honor student, a distinguished scholar, an award-winning teacher and, most recently, as the esteemed dean of the Division of Social Sciences. He has also served as chair of the Department of History, as well as chair of the Council on Educational Development.
Since 1992, Scott's leadership of the Division of Social Sciences — which includes 15 departments and programs and 12 research centers and institutes — has enhanced the superb quality of those programs, many of them nationally ranked. Even through years of tough budget constraints, he grew the division's excellence, which continues today.
Scott's many honors and fellowships include two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the UC President's Fellowship in the Humanities, the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and a UCLA Faculty Development Award.
Scott graduated summa cum laude from UCLA in 1970 with a bachelor of arts degree in history and received his Ph.D. in English history from the University of London in 1975. That same year, he began teaching in the UCLA Department of History, as a scholar of medieval history.
I have worked closely with Scott in the past and know well his many talents. Highly respected among his colleagues, he brings to his new post a superb academic career, exemplary administrative experience at every level, a firsthand appreciation of shared governance and academic freedom, and a love for UCLA.
Please join me in congratulating Scott and in welcoming him to his new position.
Sincerely,
Norman Abrams
Acting Chancellor
