The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of dean of the UCLA School of Nursing.
The UCLA School of Nursing, established in 1949, has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and clinical practice and is currently ranked tenth among the nation’s nursing schools. The school has been dedicated to developing the scientific basis of nursing and to preparing advanced nursing practitioners to provide nursing care for the full spectrum of health needs in a diverse, multicultural society. Research and scholarship aimed at advancing nursing science through significant and methodologically rigorous research have been critical components of the school's mission. The 30 faculty are among the most highly trained in the nation and their scholarly work currently attracts $6.1M in external funding, including $4.2M in support from the NIH. The school is budgeted to grow to 48.5 FTE faculty. Among its 450 students, 82 percent are at the graduate level, including 39 Ph.D. students. In addition to teaching and research, the School has taken advantage of its location in the large and richly diverse economic and cultural community of Los Angeles to make its community outreach program a model in the field.
The faculty is organized in two sections: primary and acute care. The school offers Bachelor of Science (generic pre-licensure BS and RN to BS), Master of Science in Nursing (pre-licensure Master’s Entry Clinical Nurse MECN and post-licensure Advanced Practice), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs, some with specialties.
As the chief executive officer for the school of nursing, the dean will set the standard of intellectual engagement and accomplishment for the school. The dean will provide strategic vision and operational leadership to all aspects of the academic and scholarly program, creating an environment and community that supports the school’s faculty and its students. The dean will provide the leadership to assure that the school continues to serve its students with academic programs of the highest quality and effectiveness. Supporting the university’s research mission, the dean will advance the scholarly activities of the faculty, including the opportunities that interdisciplinary approaches afford. The dean will also be the school’s public voice, promoting collegiate initiatives within UCLA, and articulating the school’s contributions in local, state, regional, national and international arenas of nursing, health care, and health policy. In pursuing these responsibilities, the dean, who reports to the executive vice chancellor/provost, will work collaboratively with the chancellor and executive vice chancellor and with vice chancellors, other deans and department chairs at UCLA and throughout the University of California system.
The successful candidate will be nationally recognized with demonstrated leadership in teaching, research, and public service. Minimum requirements include an earned doctorate in nursing or a related field; a record of distinguished teaching and research; substantial administrative experience, preferably in a research university; proven success in external fund development; and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of full professor in nursing.
Situated on 419 acres in Westwood Village, five miles from the Pacific Ocean, UCLA enjoys the benefits of its location within greater Los Angeles and the geographic variety and climatic appeal of the southern California region. It is among the most distinguished research institutions in the nation, public or private, with 4,100 faculty members who teach 36,000 students in the College of Letters and Science and 11 professional schools and who in 2006 generated about $800M in research contracts and grants. The university’s healthcare programs join nursing with medicine, dentistry, public health, the biomedical library and the UCLA Healthcare System.
